Concerned about the digitisation of heritage resources? Comment on this draft policy!

The Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) have released a final draft of the national Policy on Digitisation of Heritate Resources for public review.

DAC is planning to hold a workshop on this document on 3 February, details are still to be confirmed.

We will collate all comments submitted to this website, in response to this article, and forward to DAC.

Please note that we have attached a number of relevant policy documents developed in other parts of the world, for your information.

  • My impressions are that overall this is a good document considering that it is a first draft. I do think there are some significant areas which need to be addressed, however, particularly:
    1. The document’s treatment of the right to privacy
    2. The process for recognising an NDR and the place of the ISO standard OAIS in this
    3. The unrealistic and problematic goal to digitise everything
    4. CORI and its configuration
    5. The suggestion for a new technology to replace HTML
    6. The place of existing private sector organisations working the heritage world, particularly local digitisation companies and software developers.
    7. The lack of due consideration for out of copyright materials
    8. The inadequate provision for the digitisation and metadata of materials in languages other than English. The policy is just not strong enough on this
