Since March 2010, the Africa Media Online team have worked with the staff of the Vukani Museum in the Fort Nongqayi Museum Village, in Eshowe in KwaZulu Natal to digitise the museums collection of 3,500 traditional Zulu baskets, pottery and other objects.

With funding from the National Lottery Distribution Fund the team spent four weeks photographind of the objects. Each object was photographed three times, once with an accession number, once with a gray card and once on its own. The Africa Media Online Team trained a team of metadata capturers from the museum and set them to work capturing the metadata from their catalogue. They also purchased and set up a whole studio for them and trained the director, Vivienne Garside, and her team in its operation so that as they add objects to their collection, they can keep building their digital collection.

Finally they set up the Vukani Museum Collection website running on their newly launched MEMAT 3.1 media management system to host the digital collection and give access to researchers and other users.

Researchers can view water-marked objects on the website - see example left, or purchase high resolution images through Africa Media Online.
