Five new African sites inscribed on the World Heritage List
“The African World Heritage Fund is glad and proud to announce that five new African Sites were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List during this year’s World Heritage Committee Meeting that took place in Paris June 19 - 29. This is the first year that as many as five African Sites has been inscribed on the List - a development that we will continue to work hard to keep up.”
The African Sites that were inscribed this year are:
Kenya Lakes System in the Great Rift Valley (Kenya)
Konso Cultural Landscape (Ethiopia)
Fort Jesus, Mombasa (Kenya)
Saloum Delta (Senegal)
Archaeological Sites of the Island of Meroe (Sudan)
The inscriptions are the result of the work of site managers, heritage professionals, Government representatives and all of those who have engaged themselves in the work of preparing the nomination files so that the inscriptions could take place. The African World Heritage Fund would like to thank all of those who have been working towards these inscriptions. We would also like to use the occation to thank all of our donors and a special thanks to The Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their generous contributions to our programmes.
We hope that you, like us, will see this not only as a great success but also as a motivation to keep working together, inspire and help each other for the cause of preserving the magnificent heritage of Africa.
