Homophobia, human rights and tradition

The recent conviction and sentencing of gay couple Tiwonge Chimbalanga and Steve Monjez in Malawi left many people questioning the universality of human rights when same sex intimacy continues to be criminalised throughout Africa. It’s worrying too, when lawmakers statement that the couple committed a ‘crime against our religion and our laws”, and the archive of tradition is used as a defence for human rights abuse.
