Mpumalanga leads in planning for liberation heritage

Mpumalanga will be the first of all nine provinces to consult with the citizens on planning for the National Liberation Heritage Route at a Summit on 19 and 20 July 2010 at the Ngwenyama Logdge from 09h00. The Route is a global project that will be a network of sites that narrate the painful success of the South African struggle from the traditional resistance battles to the modern democracy.  It is recognised by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

Two sites in Mpumalanga, Gert Sibande Cultural Precinct and Samora Machel Memorial, have made it to the tentative list that is published by UNESCO. The Summit delegates will also have an opportunity to motivate for other sites that have a significant liberation history about people or events that took place in Mpumalanga.

The National Liberation Heritage Route is a project that is led by the National Heritage Council of South Africa. This project is believed to have a high potential to activate economic markets and job opportunities that only the heritage of this country can facilitate.

The Mpumalanga Premier, DD Mabuza, MEC for Culture, Sport and Recreation, Vusi Shongwe and CEO of the NHC, Adv. Sonwabile Mancotywa will lead a delegation of government leaders who are expected to attend the summit.

Non Governmental Organizations that are well versed with the liberation struggle in the country will also attend the summit to achieve the desired objectives of having a society that is informed on the liberation route of the country.
