The Northern Cape is celebrating National Archives Week from 9 - 13 May 2011

The Northern Cape Department of Sport, Arts and Culture through its Directorate of Libraries and Archives Services will celebrate the Archives Week from Monday 09 May to Friday 13 May 2011. The week will be celebrated under a theme: “ARCHIVES FOR THE PAST, THE PRESENT AND THE FUTURE”.

The Archives Week will focus primarily on preparing client offices for the repatriation of the Archival Records which are still kept in the Western Cape and Pretoria to the province. This will also ensure that the disposal of ephemeral records is executed effectively to ensure the smooth transfer of Archival Records to the provincial Repository. Plans for the construction of the Repository are well advanced.

The institutionalization of the Repository will open new doors to new careers in the province, e.g. Archivists, Researchers, and Support workers. These and other related opportunities will be presented to learners as possible career choices.

During the Archives Weeks, identified institutions/organizations and a number of schools will be visited to be taught about the value of Archives and career opportunities thereof. They will also be given the opportunity to participate and contribute to our oral history.

One of the talks during the Archives Week will highlight the impact the Repository will have on the lives of the people of the Northern Cape. During the Archives Week government will explain the importance of repatriating records currently housed in the Cape Archives to their home of origins. The preservation of the heritage of people is the responsibility of the Provincial Government through the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture in the Northern Cape. The Northern Cape is the last province to establish its repository as a facility of preservation since the dawn of democracy.

The department will be visiting a number of schools during Archives Week to raise awareness on the importance of records management, archives and oral history. They will also raise awareness on the career opportunities that are available in the Archives and Records Management field.
