The Western Cape government calls for input on a new museums policy

The Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) invites comment on a Discussion Paper: Towards a new provincial museum policy for the Western Cape. This Discussion Paper arises from a consultation process begun in 2010 to review the exclusive constitutional legislative mandate of the provincial government regarding ‘museums other than national museums’ and has been informed by a number of specialist studies commissioned by the provincial Government of the Western Cape.

The discussion paper aims to:

1)  Define the role of museums in the 21st century
2)  Provide an historic overview of:
o the establishment of museums
o the development of museum policy and legislation within the current constitutional environment

3)  Set out the proposed legislative, financial and administrative framework for the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport of the Western Cape Provincial Government to:
o establish and spell out the role of the Provincial Government regarding „museums other than national museums‟ (its constitutional mandate);
o establish and support affiliated museums
o encourage individuals, authorities or organisations to establish and manage museums in their own communities
o encourage the promotion of our heritage.

4)  Investigate international trends and good practices related to provincial or regional museums and museum services;

5)  Set out existing policies pertaining to the management of museums and identify the gaps that exist.

Below, for your information, please find attached the The Discussion Paper as well as an executive summary and recommendations included in a recent study on the economic value and impact of heritage sites in the Western Cape.

DCAS invites anyone with a keen interest in heritage to provide input towards a new provincial museum policy for the Western Cape.

Written comments and enquiries with respect to this Discussion Paper should be sent no later than 30 June 2011 (end of business) to:
