‘Winnie the opera’ draws on the archive to tell the story of Winnie Madikizela Mandela. Opening with a dramatisation of Madikizela’s testimony to the Truth And Reconciliation Commission, the opera sets out to highlight the events that shaped Madikizela’s history. As Warren Wilensky the writer says, “It’s not the story of a grand heroine. It’s the story of the human condition, essentially”. Composed by Bongani Ndodana-Breen and written by Warren Wilensky, ‘Winnie the opera’ combines classical music, traditional choral music, themes from standard church hymns and Xhosa instruments. Unlike conventional European opera, the singing is conversational and is performed in English, Xhosa and Afrikaans.
