The 9th edition of the AFRICOM News
The 9th edition of the newsletter is credited to all the members who contributed the articles, news items and reports on activities related to museums and heritage in Africa. AFRICOM endeavors to share information with all its members and institutions on the latest developments within the field, as a way of raising awareness and encouraging networking among the professional museum community in Africa.
In producing this newsletter AFRICOM is greatly indebted to UNESCO which funded this project as one of the key communication components of the UNESCO-AFRICOM Partnership Project on reinforcing the professional museum network in Africa. The newsletter presents AFRICOM’s strategic partnership with Norway and UNESCO, as well as other emerging partnerships with the President’s and my message to the membership further highlighting that partnership is the key to transforming African Museums.
This edition echoes on exciting news about partner organizations working on the African continent as well as inspiring activities and programs enriching the lives of Communities between 2010 and the first quarter of 2011. These include a special feature on Safeguarding Desert Libraries in Mauritania, the return of the Makonde mask to Tanzania, the sad demise of AFRICOM’s founding member Dr Claude Ardouin as well as board member Dr Norbert Kayombo, looting of artifacts at the Egyptian Museum and the meeting of UNESCO director general with the AFRICOM President .
